A master key system lets a winery owner out toward the Russian River carry one key while the tasting room lead, the cellar crew and the office each carry a key that opens only their own doors. The same logic runs apartment buildings in Roseland, medical suites near Sutter and Kaiser, boutique hotels in Healdsburg, and the shop buildings on the edge of town where a foreman needs the barn and the office but not the owner's house. Vintage Lock & Key designs and pins these systems on existing hardware where it allows.

The tech maps who needs access to what, drafts the levels (grand master, master, sub-master, change keys), and picks a keyway that a hardware store cannot duplicate. Cylinders are pinned on the van, keys are stamped and logged by number, and you receive a key schedule showing which key opens which door. Room is left in the design for doors you have not built yet, which matters on a property that adds a building every few years.

It begins with a walk-through or a floor plan sent by email. The $89 service call covers the on-site survey and is applied toward the job. Within a day or two you receive a written, itemized quote: cylinders per unit, keys per copy, design time listed once. Once you approve, that quote is sealed. Installation is scheduled around your hours, including early mornings before the tasting room opens.

Master key work is quoted per project because door count, keyway choice and restricted-key options move the price. What does not move is the format of the quote or the number after you sign off. Later rekeys of single doors stay inside the same system at the ordinary per-cylinder rate. Evening or overnight installation, if you need it, carries the standard $30 or $60 surcharge, stated in the quote.

Locked out of my apartment above one of the antique shops at 11pm after dinner on Fourth Street. Quoted $139 on the call, $109 for the lockout plus the $30 evening add, and that was the charge. The text with the technician's name came a minute later, the van was there in about fifteen, and the old door opened without a scratch.

FAQ

Master Key Systems: quick answers

How is a master system different from keying every door alike?+

Keyed alike means one key opens everything, so every holder has full access. A master system limits each key to its own doors while you hold the one that opens all of them. Losing a change key means rekeying one door, not the building.

Our winery has Schlage on the tasting room and an odd brand on the barn. Can both join one system?+

Often, if the keyways can be matched. Cylinders that cannot be pinned into the chosen keyway are swapped, and those swaps are listed in the quote so the count is clear before you approve anything.

What if the master key itself is lost during harvest?+

The affected level is repinned, not the whole property. A well-drawn system keeps any single master from reaching more doors than it should. Restricted keyways make copying much harder, which is why the tech suggests them for properties with seasonal crews.
